Sanding and Film Build

Sanding between layers is not intended to remove everything that was just applied.

Its purpose may be to smooth raised grain, remove dust nibs, level minor texture, refine primer, and create the surface required for the next layer.

However, sanding removes film. If the first coat is too thin, aggressive sanding may cut through to the substrate or primer. If the coat is too heavy, sanding may expose a soft layer that pills, clogs paper, or rolls rather than producing clean dust.

Why Open-Grain Wood Looks Different

Film build does not automatically erase wood texture.

Oak, ash, hickory, and other open-grain woods contain pores and valleys that remain visible beneath an opaque coating unless a grain-filling process is included. Adding more topcoat is not a responsible substitute for filling the grain.

Heavy paint may soften the texture temporarily, but it can also collect around profiles and create an uneven build while the deeper pores remain visible.

Film Build and Long-Term Performance

A coating performs as a complete film.

Still, when film build is wrong, even a good product can underperform.

Be cautious when the entire quality explanation is reduced to a dramatic coat count. More layers are not automatically better, and fewer are not automatically worse.

The better question is whether each layer has a purpose and whether the complete system is being built to the correct thickness.
