Why Cabinet Paint Peels

Cabinet paint does not usually peel because the kitchen was used too much.

Normal wear can polish edges, scratch surfaces, and damage corners. Peeling is different. It means one layer of the coating system has lost its bond to the layer beneath it.

The failure may be between the topcoat and primer, between the primer and old finish, within an existing coating, or between the original finish and the cabinet itself.

Finding that failed layer is the first step. Painting over the loose surface is not a repair.

Grease and Invisible Contamination

Kitchen cabinets collect contamination that walls do not.

Cooking oils become airborne and settle on doors and frames. Hands leave skin oils, lotion, and residue around pulls. Furniture polish, wax, silicone cleaners, smoke, and household sprays build films that may be difficult to see.

A new coating can dry over that contamination without bonding through it.

The finish may look excellent at first. Later, an edge is bumped or tape is removed and the coating releases in sheets.

Silicone contamination can also create fisheyes or small craters during spraying. Even tiny amounts can disrupt the wet film.

Cleaning and degreasing are therefore structural steps in the finish system, not cosmetic housekeeping.

Painting Over a Hard, Glossy Surface

A cured factory finish can be extremely slick.

New paint needs either a chemical bond, a mechanical profile, or both. If the old surface is left glossy, the new layer has little texture to hold.

Sanding creates microscopic peaks and valleys. The primer and coating flow into that profile and form a stronger mechanical connection.

The goal is not always to remove the original finish completely. It is to remove gloss, expose weak areas, and create a stable prepared surface.

Scuffing a few visible spots is not enough. Edges, profiles, corners, and frame areas need the same attention.

The Wrong Primer

Primer must bond to the prepared cabinet and accept the finish coat.

A general wall primer may not adhere well to a hard furniture finish. An adhesion primer may not block tannins. A stain blocker may not be approved beneath the selected topcoat. A primer may also be recoated before it has developed enough strength.

When the primer is wrong, the coating can fail as a clean layer. The color and primer may remain attached to each other while both peel from the cabinet.

That is evidence that the failure occurred at the substrate, not that the topcoat itself was weak.

Incompatible Coating Layers

Existing cabinets may already contain several generations of finish.

A new waterborne coating may be applied over an old oil varnish, lacquer, conversion varnish, latex paint, unknown clear coat, or a prior do-it-yourself repaint.

Compatibility cannot be assumed.

Some coatings contain additives that interfere with adhesion. Some old films remain soft. Some react when exposed to strong solvents. Some appear stable until the new layer shrinks during curing and pulls the old coating away.

Test areas and adhesion testing help reveal those risks before the entire kitchen is coated.

Painting Over a Failing Finish

New paint cannot strengthen loose paint beneath it.

If the existing coating is peeling, cracking, flaking, or poorly bonded, every new layer depends on that failure.

The new finish may appear to adhere because it bonds to the old paint. When the old paint releases, the complete stack comes off together.

A failing coating needs to be removed back to a sound layer. In severe cases, full stripping or replacement of particular components may be more responsible than trying to stabilize the surface.

Moisture and Water Damage

Water can attack the cabinet and the coating.

Leaks under sinks, steam near dishwashers, wet towels, plumbing drips, and repeated water around toe kicks or door edges can swell MDF and particleboard. Veneer may lift. Joints may open.

Paint does not reverse that damage.

Moisture can also become trapped beneath a coating or enter through damaged edges. The loss of adhesion may appear as blisters before the film peels.

The water source must be corrected before refinishing. Otherwise, a new surface is being applied over an active problem.

Insufficient Drying and Cure

A coating can be dry enough to touch and still too soft for normal cabinet contact.

Doors that are reinstalled too quickly may stick to bumpers or frames. When the door opens, the coating can tear away from one surface. Wrapping or stacking soft doors can also imprint or pull at the finish.

Applying additional coats too quickly can trap water or solvent. The surface may harden while lower layers remain soft.

Proper recoat windows, film thickness, drying conditions, and protected early cure time reduce these risks.

Excessive Film Thickness

Thick paint can look protective, but coatings are designed for a specified total film build.

Heavy layers cure slowly. Profiles become rounded. Corners hold excess material. The coating may crack as the wood moves or as the film shrinks.

Multiple repainting cycles can create a thick stack even when each new coat appears reasonable. At some point, the combined layers become less stable.

A professional evaluation considers the entire existing coating, not just the finish being added.

Weak Edges and High-Contact Areas

Cabinet edges receive disproportionate wear.

Fingernails catch the tops of doors. Rings strike corners. Pulls are missing or poorly positioned. Doors rub against one another because hinges are out of adjustment. Cleaning cloths repeatedly scrub the same areas.

This wear may begin as a chip rather than broad adhesion failure. Once the film is broken, moisture and handling can widen the damage.

Good edge preparation, controlled spray coverage, correct hardware, bumpers, and door alignment all contribute to durability.

Surface Dust After Sanding

Sanding creates the profile needed for adhesion, but the dust must be removed.

A coating applied over loose dust bonds to the dust instead of the cabinet. The layer may release or form a weak, gritty surface.

Dust control is especially important around door profiles, corners, hinge cups, and decorative details where powder collects.

Cleaning before sanding and dust removal after sanding solve different problems. Both are required.

Harsh Cleaning Products

Once cured, cabinet finishes tolerate normal mild cleaning. They are not immune to every chemical.

Strong degreasers, solvent cleaners, ammonia-heavy products, abrasive powders, melamine foam pads, and repeated disinfectant use can dull, soften, or erode some coatings.

Cleaning damage usually appears as loss of sheen, softening, or surface wear before widespread peeling. If the finish already has weak adhesion, harsh cleaning can accelerate the failure.

The refinisher should provide product-specific care instructions.

How to Tell Which Layer Failed

Look at the back of the peeling chip and the surface left behind.

If bare wood or the original factory finish is exposed while primer remains attached to the paint chip, the failure occurred below the primer.

If primer remains on the cabinet and only the color peels, the problem may be intercoat adhesion.

If multiple old paint colors come off together, an earlier repaint may be the weak link.

If the cabinet material itself tears or fibers remain attached to the chip, the substrate may be damaged.

This visual inspection is not a complete laboratory analysis, but it helps identify whether the problem is contamination, compatibility, prior failure, or substrate damage.

Can Peeling Cabinets Be Refinished?

Often, yes, but the loose system must be removed back to a stable layer.

Localized chips may be repaired when the surrounding adhesion is strong. Widespread peeling can require extensive stripping, sanding, or replacement of doors and panels.

The repair should be tested before the complete project proceeds.

The cost may also change. Refinishing sound factory cabinets is different from rescuing a failed repaint with unknown layers. Honest estimating needs to account for that additional risk and labor.

Why More Paint Is Not the Answer

A new coat may temporarily hold down the edges of peeling paint. It does not restore the lost bond underneath.

As the new coating cures and the cabinet moves, the weak layer remains the release point. The failure returns, often in larger sheets because the new paint has tied more of the loose surface together.

The correct repair is to remove the failure, prepare the sound surface, and rebuild the compatible system.
