A lightly cleaned, minimally sanded cabinet can look excellent immediately after spraying.
The coating may level beautifully and feel dry. Photographs cannot reveal whether grease remains underneath, whether the original finish is loose, or whether the primer is compatible.
Those shortcuts are exposed by time and use.
Edges begin chipping. Paint lifts around pulls. Tannins appear through white. Doors stick at bumpers. Thick areas remain soft. Old cracks return through the new coating.
Preparation does not guarantee that a cabinet will never be damaged. It gives the coating system the soundest practical foundation for normal service.
What Proper Preparation Should Accomplish
By the time a cabinet is ready for finish coats, the surface should be:
